2008 Denver Walker experience at a glance
My first walk was an unforgettable experience. I knew that it would be big- it is a large event traditionally, but this year was also the 20th anniversary of the Walk MS in Colorado. However, I had no idea just how big it would be. There were over 5,000 walkers registered. It was held at Denver's City Park, which is a beautiful location in downtown Denver.
The three of us arrived in our matching MS Walk tee shirts at about 8AM.
Oliver brought a flag he had decorated that said "I walk for Mommy," and he began proudly waving it the minute we stepped out of the car. What was supposed to be a cold, overcast morning turned out to be stunning.
The sky was clear and bright blue, and lake was absolutely glittering in the morning sun. We all began at the starting line with Denver's East High's drum line getting us moving. We were surrounded by throngs of people, and everyone was smiling! Some walked, some rolled on their wheelchairs, and some strode along with their walkers. It seemed like every single person there either had MS or was inspired to walk by someone they loved who had MS. Everyone wore "MS Champion" signs on their back, displaying the name of their personal "Champion" with MS. I was Matt and Ollie's champion (It made me feel so cool!) Some, like me, wore them in memory of someone we loved who has passed away after their battle with MS.
The entire event was a celebration. There were live bands, food, and all sorts of fun. After we walked, we danced to the music, had some pizza, and played at the park.
I left the event uplifted and empowered. We had been surrounded by an immense amount of love and camaraderie. For the first time since my diagnosis last September, I felt only pure hope. I felt like we had done something to be a part of the solution, and I knew that, by walking, we had all come one step closer to a cure.
We are already planning our walk for next year. For those of you who have not had a chance to donate, contributions are still being accepted. Don't you want your name to be featured on my personal page on the NMSS website? You can still be added to the scrolling list of names;)
Thank you all for your love and support!
Love,Sara J.
